We’re incredibly proud to celebrate the amazing achievement of our Business Development Manager, Stephanie Young, who recently completed a gruelling 53km Ultra Challenge through the hills of the Cotswolds, all in support of the charity WAY – Widowed and Young, raising almost £600.
Stephanie’s day began at 6:30am and the walk started at 9:00am, with a warm and slightly cloudy morning setting the tone for a positive first half. Joined by a fellow parent for the first leg of the journey, Stephanie enjoyed a relaxed pace and the chance to share the experience – until her walking partner unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury. From there, things got serious.
The second half of the challenge was the toughest – steep inclines, sharp descents, scorching afternoon sun, and an increasingly competitive drive pushing Stephanie forward. But the spirit of the event shone through with garden hose sprays from kind locals, a much-needed ice pop, and the uplifting sight of her daughter Hannah and her friend cheering at every checkpoint with handmade signs kept her going. Each stop was a chance to rest, recharge and connect – not just with loved ones, but with the amazing community of fellow participants.
Stephanie climbed 94 places in the third stage of the event and a further 25 in the final stretch, a reflection of her incredible determination. Despite ongoing concerns about her calf (already injured twice this year), she pushed through, finishing the full 53+ kilometres in 13 hours and 33 minutes, including breaks.
Her takeaway? The power of community, the reminder that resilience takes many forms, and the importance of proper hill training!. When asked if she’d do it again, her answer was honest: “I should say no… but yes. Maybe something a bit more flat next time!”
Stephanie’s strength, humour and commitment are an inspiration to us all, and we are thrilled to share her success. She’s raised vital funds for a small but brilliant charity and shown what can be achieved with passion and perseverance – even on very tired legs.
Thank you, Stephanie – and congratulations from all of us at Chilterns and Bierton Crematoria.
